With over nine years of formal personal styling and image consulting experience, Monica has advised politicos, styled executives, worked with professional athletes, and curated entrepreneurs.
When did you fall in love with fashion?
Whoa- kinda hard to remember but I have pictures of me as young as four or five with crazy looking outfits on Saturdays since it was my day to “dress myself”!
How do you define style?
Style is a combination of fashion and function with a dose of personality sprinkled on top. It’s also a little about having fun within the constraints of everyday living.
What does a typical day for you look like?
(Now) I workout in the morning usually between 5-7AM; respond to urgent emails and fast to-do’s between 8:30-9:30AM; focus on posts for the newsletter and talk with my sister for an hour; and then it’s up for grabs! I need to implement at least 2 hours dedicated to fielding client concerns though.
How long have you been an image consultant?
I have been doing image consulting and personal styling for over nine years; and have only recently expanded into doing style training for corporations.
If you weren’t offering styling expertise, what would your occupation be?
I would likely revert back to health care revenue cycle consulting, which is what I did for 14 years prior to this!
How did you take your leap of faith into solopreneurship? What was the journey like?
There is a fine line between insanity and inspiration – I walked into my bosses office after 6 years and said I was tired and quit. In hindsight, I would have laid a more thought out plan but sometimes, you just have to leap. The journey started out awesome, dipped for a bit to exhausting, and has rebounded to blessed and fabulous!
In 10 years, what do you envision your life to look like?
I will have a small stable of regular clients; I will be working with more corporations; and doing speaking engagements for my book and upcoming project (that will be huge)!
What has been your biggest challenge in life and work?
Making ends meet sometimes; and balancing when to stop working and just exhale. The lines can get blurred very quickly sometimes when running your own business.
How do you overcome, or try to overcome these challenges?
I give myself space to exhale and freak out and then bring it back together; I surround myself with positive people who can give me encouragement, assistance and perspective when I need it and when I don’t want it; and I pray….a lot!
What has been your most prized accomplishment?
Hmmm I’m not sure I can point to one thing because I am continually blessed with new opportunities but perhaps it’s being able to reach the point at which I can give back with feeling like it does a disservice to growing my business.
What is your most favorite quote?
“To whom much is given, much is required”
How would you describe your lifestyle to classroom full of impressionable kids during your Career Day presentation?
I am living a dream! I work with people who are interested and focused on putting their best foot forward and I get to help them do that. I also have the flexibility to make a lot of decisions about when and how it happens which means I get to give back more often. My lifestyle is hard work but something I wake up everyday loving!
What is your personal style like?
I am edgy, feminine relaxed chic with zest 100%!
If you could go back to your 9 year old self, what would you tell her?
Easy — I would say stop spending money on trendy, small items, and focus on the bigger, nicer investment pieces.
If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
I would have an Hermes Birkin bag.
